Robert Cottingham (USA, b.1935)
Richard Meier (USA, b.1934)
Michael Zansky (USA, b.1947)

Featured Artists
Robert Cottingham (USA, b.1935)
Richard Meier (USA, b.1934)
Michael Zansky (USA, b.1947)

This exhibition features three artists from the United States, and its title US3, is a play on the name of the American expressway that runs from the state of Massachusetts to the Canadian border. Each artist will show a series of twelve works on paper that reflect what a traveler might see or dream about while driving down a highway.

Robert Cottingham is especially known for his paintings and prints of urban landscapes, particularly building facades, neon signs, movie marquees, and store fronts. He is often associated with Pop artists such as Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana, but prefers to be called a realist painter in the American tradition of Edward Hopper. Cottingham’s work is in the collection of such prestigious institutions as the Metropolitan Museum, Museum of Modern Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and Whitney Museum, in New York. In London his work is at the Serpentine Gallery and Tate Gallery, and in Paris, at the Centre national d’art contemporain. He has had many solo exhibitions including a retrospective at the Smithsonian National Museum of American Art in Washington, DC.

Richard Meir’s twelve silkscreen/collages are torn from advertisements, often for travel related services and products. Meier is better known as one of the most important architects working today, and as a winner of the Pritzker Prize, the profession’s highest honor. He has completed major buildings, including museums civic centers, courthouses, corporate headquarters, and residences all around the world. Some Meier projects include the Getty Center, Los Angeles, California, and the High Museum, Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States. He built the City Hall and Library at The Hague, The Netherlands; the City Tower, Prague, Czech Republic; Ara Pacis Museum, Rome, Italy; Shenzen Houses, China; and the recently completed the Xin-Yi Residential Towers in Taipei.

Michael Zansky will show twelve paintings on paper from his Odometer series. These works, as the title implies, is about travel, whether it is earthly or celestial. The distorted figures he depicts could be traveling in car down a highway, or in a space ship at the speed of light through the Milky Way. Zansky’s art in general is concerned with the human plight in an infinite and unknowable universe. Cosmology is a frequent theme where strange worlds are inhabited by bizarre creatures taking on mysterious tasks. In addition to a long career as an artist where his work has been the subject of numerous solo shows in galleries and museums, he is also a scenic artist for movies and television, and a production designer in off-Broadway theater. Notable projects include the TV shows The Sopranos and Law & Order: SVU, and the movies Fatal Attraction, Donnie Brasco, and Godzilla.

The portfolios of twelve silkscreens each by Cottingham and Meier were both published by Greg Smith of Contemporary Art and Editions, based in Short Hills, New Jersey, USA. Zanksy’s works are twelve in a series of unique works of the same size and materials.
